Autism is a neurological spectrum disorder that affects 1 out of every 88 children
in the United States (according to The Center for Disease Control). Present research
has yet to discover what causes autism.
Primary onset of autism is evidenced by a child not reaching developmental milestones
that are typical for their age. Secondary onset can be defined as when a child reaches
milestones at the typical rate and then starts to regress, losing previously learned
skills. A child affected by autism often experiences delays in social interactions,
play skills, receptive language, and the ability to communicate appropriately.
